How it's calculated
- x = a × 10ⁿ, where 1 ≤ |a| < 10 and n is a whole number
- n = number of places the decimal point moves (left is positive, right is negative)
- Multiply / divide
- (a × 10ⁿ) × (b × 10ᵐ) = (a × b) × 10ⁿ⁺ᵐ · (a × 10ⁿ) ÷ (b × 10ᵐ) = (a ÷ b) × 10ⁿ⁻ᵐ
Example: 45,000 = 4.5 × 10⁴ and 0.00032 = 3.2 × 10⁻⁴.
E-notation writes the same thing as 4.5e4, which is how calculators and spreadsheets show it.
