Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate a trip's fuel cost from distance, your car's efficiency and the gas price — and split it per person.
Enter distance, efficiency and gas price to estimate the trip cost.
Formula
Gallons = distance ÷ efficiency (MPG) · Cost = gallons × price per gallon · Per person = cost ÷ passengers
How to calculate
- 1Divide the trip distance by your vehicle's fuel efficiency to get the gallons needed.
- 2Multiply the gallons by the fuel price for the total cost.
- 3Divide by the number of people sharing the ride for the cost per person.
- 4For a round trip, use the total distance travelled both ways.
How to use this calculator
- 1Enter the trip distance and whether it is one way or round trip.
- 2Enter your vehicle's real-world MPG.
- 3Enter the fuel price per gallon.
- 4See total gallons, total cost and — with passengers — each person's share.
Examples
Weekend trip
A 300-mile round trip at 30 MPG and $3.50/gal → 10 gallons, $35 total.
Road trip split
1,200 miles at 28 MPG and $3.80/gal → ≈ $163 total, or ≈ $41 each split four ways.
Common questions
Does my car's MPG rating match reality?
Rarely exactly — city driving, speed and load all reduce it. Use your own average (tank distance ÷ gallons) for an accurate estimate.
How do I convert L/100km to MPG?
Divide 235.2 by your L/100km figure: 8 L/100km ≈ 29.4 MPG.
Should I budget extra?
Yes — prices vary along the route and detours add miles. A 10–15% buffer is a sensible cushion.
