Final Grade Calculator
Find the exact score you need on your final exam to reach your target course grade.
Enter your current grade, the final's weight and your target to see what you need.
Formula
How to calculate
- 1Write down your current grade and how much the final is worth (e.g. 30%).
- 2Multiply your current grade by the share of the course NOT covered by the final (1 − weight).
- 3Subtract that from your target course grade.
- 4Divide by the final's weight — that is the minimum exam score you need.
How to use this calculator
- 1Enter your current grade as a percent.
- 2Enter what the final exam is worth in the course.
- 3Enter your target final course grade.
- 4See the score you need — and whether it is realistically achievable.
Examples
Tight target
Current 85%, final worth 30%, target 90% → (90 − 85 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 101.7% — unreachable without extra credit.
Realistic target
Current 78%, final worth 40%, target 80% → (80 − 78 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 83% — a strong but possible study goal.
Common questions
What if the needed score is over 100%?
Then the target grade cannot be reached with the final alone. Ask your instructor about extra credit, regrades or assignments you can still improve.
Can the final lower my grade?
Yes — scoring below your current average on a heavily-weighted final pulls the course grade down. The calculator shows the exact break-even score for your target.
Does this work for points-based classes?
Yes — enter your grade and the final's weight as percentages: current points ÷ points so far × 100, and final points ÷ total points × 100.
