Formula

GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours, on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, F = 0.0)

How to calculate

  1. 1Convert each letter grade to grade points: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, F = 0.0.
  2. 2Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours.
  3. 3Add the weighted points for all courses, and add the total credits.
  4. 4Divide total weighted points by total credits — that is your GPA.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Add a row for each course with its grade and credit hours.
  2. 2Pick letter grades on the 4.0 scale or enter numeric equivalents.
  3. 3Add or remove courses to match your semester.
  4. 4Your weighted GPA updates live as you type.

Examples

Semester example

A (3 cr), B+ (4 cr), A− (3 cr), C+ (2 cr) → (12.0 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 4.6) ÷ 12 = 3.41 GPA.

Why credits matter

A 1-credit F drags a 3-credit A down to 3.0 — credit hours weight every grade.

Common questions

What is a good GPA?

3.0 and above is considered solid at most schools; 3.5+ is competitive for graduate programs and many scholarships.

Do plus and minus grades count differently?

At most US schools yes — an A− is 3.7 and a B+ is 3.3. Some institutions skip the modifiers entirely, so check your school's scale.

Do pass/fail courses affect my GPA?

Usually not — pass/fail credits carry no grade points and are excluded from the GPA calculation, though they may still count toward graduation.
