How it's calculated
- Add tax
- Gross = Net × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
- Remove tax
- Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
- Tax = Gross − Net
To remove tax from a price that already includes it, divide by 1 + rate. Subtracting the rate's percentage of the gross price gives the wrong answer.
Example: £120 including 20% VAT is £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net, with £20 of VAT.
